My Portfolio

If you’re looking to hire someone as a writer and/or editor, check out my portfolio. These examples are a small representation of my work over the past two decades. If you have specific questions, please contact me. Also, be sure to review my resume for a more complete picture of my experience. I’ve been involved in a lot of different types of writing, which include being published multiple times nationally, as well as serving as Writer and Creative Director for an Emmy award-winning documentary.

Harney & Sons Fine Teas

I have been writing for the international tea company Harney & Sons for years. In that time, I drafted nearly 400 blogs and countless organic and paid social posts, emails, developed campaign themes, crafted product descriptions and more. I had the opportunity to work with Disney when Harney launched its Disney Collection line of teas, write copy for their Agatha Christie-inspired teas and most recently, help develop and launch their Schitt’s Creek collection. Here is a sampling of my work for them. All blogs listed here and on their website list the client as the author, but I drafted them all.

Republic Airways | LIFT Academy

I wrote for Republic Airways, one of the largest regional airlines in the U.S., and their new flight training school, LIFT Academy. I helped launch LIFT with the theme “Explorers Wanted” targeting a young audience to achieve their dream of becoming pilots. Most of my work was developing print pieces, digital ads and OOH advertising.

Print Pieces

I’ve drafted many, many print pieces in my career. Here’s a series of three brochures I created for South Bend Orthopaedics as well as a fundraising brochure for The Nature Conservancy of Indiana to showcase the variety of areas I have written about.

Email

When you want to get your audience’s attention and send an important message, email is the most efficient and inexpensive tool in your toolkit. Making sure that the message is seen, however, amidst the sea of emails flooding our inboxes. The content, of course, must be compelling, on message and clearly show the reader that there is benefit for them in reading the email and taking the desired action.

Here are a few examples of emails I have drafted.

Press Releases

A good press release has all the important facts: who, what, where, when and hopefully, but not always, why. A great press release involves research, interviews that yield depth-adding quotes, and a reason for the media to think there might be something bigger here than a calendar notation. As the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink . . . unless you have written a really great press release on why he or she should (which can be trough . . . I mean tough).

In addition to these examples, I’ve written releases for large events, such as presentations by best-selling authors Elizabeth Gilbert and Anne Lamott, and a visit to Indianapolis by His Holiness The Dalai Lama.

Websites

While I have had the opportunity to draft copy for many websites, these five will give you an idea of how I can mix and match my voice to reflect that of the client.

LIFT Academy

When Republic Airways came to CVR for help in creating their new flight school, LIFT Academy, we created a brand, collateral materials, digital ads and an entire website. As part of the Republic/LIFT team, I draft all content for those materials and the recruiting site, including the concept of “Explorers Wanted” as their theme. We created a compelling video as part of that effort; it was my job to create that story and generate excitement (which it did).

Rare Bird, Inc.

During my first year at Rare Bird, we gave the website a complete overhaul. I drafted all the content as well as many of the portfolio case studies and the staff bios. I also contributed several blog posts.

Cub Cadet Golf

Cub Cadet is known world wide for their top-notch lawn equipment. When they expanded into a niche golf course equipment market, they came to us to create their site (as well as other ancillary print pieces). Not only did I know nothing about golf, (let me reiterate — I knew nothing about golf), but I read about their products, learned about golf course maintenance, and drafted copy.

Lile Wellness Partners

Dr. Lile approached us needing not only an updated website, but a brand new name for her practice, which had morphed into a national concierge business that was not reflected by her name or her site. After much brainstorming, I proposed Lile Wellness Partners, which she loved. Again, I drafted the content on the site after spending much time talking with Dr. Lile and researching her brand of practice.

Woodley Farra Manion

Listening is first and foremost the key to creating a successful website. This financial planning firm has a very definite tried-and-true approach to working with their clients and their investment strategy. Likening it to a marathon/running metaphor made sense to me, and it made sense to them as well.

McFarling Foods

When McFarling Foods, a well-known Indianapolis/Indiana food distributor/processor, approached us for a new website, they knew exactly what they wanted: a site that highlighted the fact that they’re a local, employee-owned company right up there with what they do. I worked with our graphic designer to strike the right tone and deliver the message they wanted their audience to receive.

Blog Posts

I’ve written hundreds of blog post in the decade on a variety of subjects. Blogs are a chance for a writer to immerse themselves in a subject they may not be familiar with at all and create valuable content with SEO value. See the Harney section above for a handful of blog examples I’ve drafted.

Miscellaneous

As my resume indicates, I have extensive experience writing for many mediums. I was the editor and primary writer for a quarterly magazine for St. Luke’s United Methodist Church for over a decade and attach just one article from my time there. It reflects my personal experience on a trip to Haiti. It was my job to put together the issue content, edit contributions, interview and write the primary features.

I include another print piece I did for Indiana Wesleyan University. Again, it required many interviews, research and taking on the proper tone for the program and the University. (That .pdf is in two printer spreads rather than one document.) Whether I’m interviewing individuals for a print piece or on camera, I enjoy having those conversations and learnings.
